You might need a driver to access an IDE drive via USB. Check with the manufacturer of the addapter (installation CD, user manual, Web-site etc.)

Like Big Mal says, sounds daft! However, the fact that it's via ide might indeed mean you need a driver. In the last machine, was straight in via usb?

That sounds crazy. Go to My computer and open. Click "explore" for that drive and see if files open. The only time I have seen that is when the files were stored on the drive via backup function. If that's the case, need to use backup software to open.

I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems.
Some drive problems can be easily fixed by yourself using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful. Try this site, if you can get what is required.
