Nothing runs without batteries? Or has yerman Bayliss been winding us up again.

The last time I put the key in and tried to start my repair manual, nothing happened. When I told this to the mechanic, it took him 5X longer to fix it because he was laughing so hard.
Nothing runs without battery's?

A human?

none of the books I read have batteries in them

It's not electrical and does not require a battery.
