Take a couple of GOOD things from each side.
I sometimes wish common sense and a common goal would drive our politics but it seems power for one's self usually does.

Yet another excellent question.

I like the basis for the Democratic platform because it advocates compassion - civil liberties, social freedoms, equal rights, equal opportunity.

I like the basis for the Republican platform because it advocates personal responsibility - lower taxes and limited government, as well as fiscal responsibility.

Whether the parties actually follow these platforms is another story, though.

The best answer, as is typically the case, lies somewhere in the middle - compassion with personal responsibility.

Not a prob..

Well one party wants individual responsibility. They want smaller less intrusive government. They want a government that is run like you run your home. No big budget projects that can not be afforded with out taking a loan. A strong military with a clear world presence. Less reliance on outside forces for safety and security. Open and free markets with as little regulation as possible. A well armed populace. Less taxation so that the rich can build more infrastructure so that the poorest can make more money and become richer. A color blind society where people are judged by their content of their character not the color of their skin. No funding for arts, if it is good it will sell in a free market. Lower taxes so that you have more control over your money and investments. Education that cost money, in a nation where education costs more, you get what you pay for. Truly motivated people will take advantage of scholarships and grants given by private people. Medical insurance, Medical break thorough don't happen for free, today we have the greatest medical treatments and facilities on earth because we invest in our health, that means putting dollars behind it.

The other party wants a greater sense of community. More accountability and reliance on each other. More programs for everyone. More of an equal footing for everyone I.E. Make the rich poorer so that the poor can be richer. A system of highly intelligent people who make the really hard decisions for the common man. A smaller military and more a unified front with other countries. More protectionist practices. Gun controls for the safety of the masses. Race based initiatives so that minorities have greater opportunity. Grants for Arts so that we can aid the starving artists so that they may create great works. More taxation so that the government can establish programs for the benefit of all. Free education, so that more people have a greater access to education. Free medical treatment for everyone, station and wealth should not be a barrier to health and well being.

The lists are HUGE. Each side has its merits and its flaws. But it is the balance that we achieve in America that makes us great.

I hate people that just bash the President rather than come up with a good argument as to why they don't like him. Remove head from sphincter and try opening up and making your own opinion and not conforming to everyone else. I think conservative principles are good because they want less government. Sorry you to the people that bought their computers with Welfare checks, that means you actually would have to work instead of the government supporting your lazy asses.

Republicans - Lower taxes=More money in the pocket, more choices .
Strong Military = Rebuilding a depleted and destroyed Military Structure and Intelligence Community .
MORAL LEADERSHIP = I'd rather we, the USA, lead from a Moral High-ground and be hated, than to cow-tow to every manipulator, and choose appeasement !!!

I think the best things about the parties platforms can often contradict each other. For instance, the left-wing view that we need social programs is terrific, but it tends to contradict the popular right-wing view that we have lower taxes. It's great to help people in need, it's also nice to have money in the bank. You are indeed correct about finding middle ground.

Democrats: care about the environment. established minimum wage and labor laws. came up with food stamps and medicare.
Republicans: support the military. tend to be better at boosting the economy (historically). pushed for slavery to be abolished.
Green Party: corporations ought to care about their workers. if a politican is failing, it should be easy to remove him from office. immigrants should have an easier time becoming legal and finding good jobs.

Domestic platform only since you've limited the question to 2 points

Democrats:
1. Election Reform - make sure everyone has the right to vote and has their vote counted.
2. Ethics Reform - end the Republican culture of corruption and restore a government as good as the people it serves

Republicans:
1. Spending Restraint (Dems support this more than Republicans)
2. Immigration Reform (Dems support this also, but want to enforce laws against employing illegal aliens too)

It seems that both parties have strayed from their core issues, but here's my take on the best of both.
Democrats: Equal education, care of the elderly, and protection of the environment.
Republicans: National defense, streamlined government, and states rights.

I notice from most the answers, you will not get an answer to your question except hate filled rhetoric! The answer to your question is the Republicans(most generally) are for smaller government, less taxes. Democrats (most generally) are for fixing the ills of society!

What platforms? Vote for me I'll fix all your problems for you and if I can't it's the other party's fault for some reason seems to be every ones platform.
