Yes, the first house was opened in 1984 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in memory of Ray Kroc who was a children's advocate. It opened as the idea of Dr. Audrey Evans and Fred Hill. The first Ronald McDonald House opened outside the United States was in 1985 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The 100th Ronald McDonald House opened in 1986 in Long Island, New York. However, they had a mobile unit operating in 1974.

Like others have said, yes they do. My family stayed at the one in Kansas City twice when I was a kid. I was having surgery at the Children's hospital nearby. They really were a miracle. We were poor and upset, and it was Thanksgiving. They had a food pantry we could use and had Thanksgiving dinner. They also had free long distance you could use, and an entertainment room with a big screen TV, pool table, and ping pong. It made the experience so much better for us. Please donate to them! Yes, they do. They provide housing for families with children being treated for life-threatening diseases in hospitals far from their home.
