Oxidation by Oxygen itself.

metal give basic oxides.

nonmetals give acidic oxides.

metalloids give neutral or aphoteric oxides.

exceptions like Al2O3 which is amphoteric,Al being a metal.

Metals give electrons to become + ions. Nonmetals take electrons to become - ions. Take a reactive nonmetal such as oxgen and see if it takes e- away. Take a reactive metal and see if it gives e-. Metals produce H2 gas in an acid.
