Close, it was coca leave at first. This link is from some book about the history of coca cola and how he added coca leaves to the early formula.

According to popular belief, the coca leaf extract cocaine was once added to Coca-Cola. Because cocaine is naturally present in untreated coca leaves, small amounts of cocaine were also present in the beverage. Today's Coca-Cola uses "spent" coca leaves, those that have been through a cocaine extraction process, to flavor the beverage. Since this process cannot extract the cocaine alkaloids at a molecular level, the drink still contains trace amounts of the stimulant. The United States DEA oversees the importation of coca for Coca-Cola, and later sale of the extracted cocaine to the drug industry.

In May, 1886, Coca Cola was invented by Doctor John Pemberton a pharmacist from Atlanta, Georgia. Until 1905, the soft drink, marketed as a tonic, contained extracts of cocaine as well as the caffeine-rich kola nut.

Coca Cola was invented in May of 1886 by a doctor names John Pemberton, who was also a pharmacist, and lived in Atlanta, Georgia. It was first marketed as a tonic, and contained extracts of cocaine (thus coca from the coca leaf) and extracts from the kola nut which contained caffeine (cola). his bookkeeper, Frank Robinson had remarkable penmanship, and wrote out inscript Coca-Cola, and it is to this day the trademark of the company.

However, as the effects of coccaine became more known, the formula changed, as they used various methods to eliminate the coccaine from the coca leaf. They also kept trace amounts of coccaine in the syrup in order to keep the trade name Coca-Cola. According to Snopes website, "by 1902 it was as little as 1/400 of a grain of cocaine per ounce of syrup. Coca-Cola didn't become completely cocaine-free until 1929. . ." These trace amounts were not enough to even "give a fly a buzz."

"Coca-Cola was named back in 1885 for its two "medicinal" ingredients: extract of coca leaves and kola nuts. Just how much cocaine was originally in the formulation is hard to determine, but the drink undeniably contained some cocaine in its early days." (from Snopes)

Great article on this true urban legend at Snopes

yes.... In the early 60s they used it very little of it.... Its was used like caffeine.... They also wanted people to get hooked on it so there product can be sold. Studies later on found that people were not only getting hooked but children were being affected by the drink .. Cola compaines were asked to remove the cocaine by the food and drug admistration and were allowed to double the caffeine in soda. In fact they not only doubled the caffeine but also the sugar to give the same affect....check out the web.. its all there under the coco cola company web site

Yes they used to extract it from the coca plant leaves, as soon as they realised there was more money to be made by shipping kilos of it in powder form, they stopped putting it in drinks.
