While I got nothing against Cannavaro, I think it was not fair enough... not because he's not a great and talented player but because anyone else listed to get the award would have been eclipsed by the "magic" of the other candidate: Zidane.
I know in soccer we tend to minimize the efforts and talent of the defenders and give extra credit just to the forwards and midfielders who are most likely to score in a match.
My point is: Cannavaro great in his position, great WC participation, regular campaign with Real Madrid... we've just seen a little of him, just like sparkles... there are a couple like him.
Zidane: World champion with France (which never has had an outstanding football), Excellent campaign with Juventus & Real Madrid, a whole career behind him... ONE OF A KIND!

to some of these numb skulls: yes its 2008 world player of the year!!!! not 2007/08 torres is a great player but just because he scored the winning goal at euros doesnt make him the best player fabregas not being in the shortlist is an absolute ****ing joke, same with ibrahimovic messi should win it, ronaldo had a brilliant 2007 but spoilt with a disappointing euros and not as good start to this season, messi was not as good in 2007 year but 2nd half of last season and this season (whole of 2008) messi was the best player and its awarded to the "BEST" player, NOT the "most prolific" player, otherwise Henry would have won it countless times over ronaldinho and cannavaro. and if so then why is Luca Toni not in the award list

I'm so sad that Zidane didn't win it,I really want Zidane to win,but being a runner-up is not that bad at all.
At least,being a runner-up is better than nothing.So,I just accept the result.I still love Zidane all the way.

As long as Zidane didn't win. I thought it was a travesty that a guy whos team only had a couple of good games in the WC should have won the Golden ball. They couldn't score no matter what for most of the games.
Then of course the headbutt in the final cuz Materazzi said stuff too him that you hear in practically every team sport in the world.

cannavaro deserved it cause he is the best defender in the world i think it was a great decision to give a defender the player of the year...he deserved it this time....

i think cannavaro winning was fare because he has played well for the azurri, juvertis n real madrid, he has alot of heart, passion, good role model, had an outstanding world cup, good leader, talented n kept the azzurri together while the match fixing scandles were takin place at home
i dnt think zidane should of gotten second because of the head buttin incident wat materazzi said wasnt not right but he shouldnt of done wat he did he has been in the game for yrs he should no that wasnt allowed n set a bad example for young kids n lost the respect of many n when u think of him now u think of the head buttin inceident
ronaldinho played a very disapointing world cup n its only recently that he has started begining 2 shine so im not sure bout ronaldinho im mixed bout him

NO i don't think they were good results ,yes cannavaro had a good world cup but apart from that nothing else.personally i like to see attacking players win these trophies .like ronaldinho, eto'o c.ronaldo ,kaka, zidane, messi ,rooney ,Henry.Not taking it away from cannavaro because he is a brilliant defender but that's my opinion.

Gianluigi Buffon should have won. He conceded only two goals in the entire world cup. One goal was an own goal, another goal was a penalty.
