Violence in any form is not a good influence to have in a child's life. This includes parents yelling and screaming at each other, video games, violent movies, etc.. The issue here is the parenting. As parents we should provide balance for our children. You need to teach your child pure things, good things, decent things, upright things, etc.. If a video game doesn't fit inside those guidelines, then it is wrong. A video game that teaches a child the reality of killing in combat is not good! A video game that teaches a child competition, and the value of wining, and teamwork, etc. is good! So, yes a violent video game can pervert a child's mind to a degree, so I believe you should stay away from them.

Violent video games do not cause violent behavior in any way shape or form. The only reason people think it does is because when a kid goes off and does something violent people in society always want to point the finger at something and say that's what to blame. Untill parents are willing to step up and take some responsibility for there own children, video games and just main stream media in general are always gonna get a bad rep for it, and honestly I don't think that's fair.

No bad parenting causes violent behavior.
If a child is left unattended for hours on end by bad parents, then maybe a violent game could make them violent. But it is probably not the video game as much as being left alone for hours on end without positive interaction with parents.
If parents are giving M rated video games to young children and leaving them unattended for hours, that's rather like giving children R rated violent movies and leaving them unattended for hours.
The problem is really a lot more complex than the video games themselves. There are those out there who wish to ban violence in video games on the basis that it can glorify violence in young children. But the same argument can be made of football where large men throw each other to the ground, or boxing, wrestling, extreme fighting etc. There are all kinds of ways that children can be led astray by watching TV or surfing the Internet. Good parents protect their children from these situations. Bad parents do not.
But the answer is certainly not to ban adult things to protect children. Why should adults have to live in a society where the government censors everything? All we can do is promote responsible parenting and hope that that is enough.

A lot of people think playing violent games will make them violent. I play violent games all the time but I don't need to think twice to not do it. It all depends on the person thats playing the game. Not many people would be stupid enough to go on grand theft auto because they saw it in a game.

No.
They might provide examples, the means for someone to do something really stupid. But in this case it is, at worst, a trigger for a tendency to bad behaviour that already exists. If you have an internalised moral code about what's right and wrong, and can tell reality from fantasy, then video games or movies won't make you violent.

Not for an adult, perhaps, but I can honestly tell you that my grandson (10) who is already somewhat "high strung" (hyperactive), can hardly play ANY kind of video game - let alone a violent one - without becoming agitated and visably ill-natured. He gets into the action, and if it becomes time to turn it off, for say, meal time, then he gets very surly and uncontrollable.

NOT AT ALL. Violent behavior derives from ones principles as a little child. so there is no problem unless you are 5 years old...

It hasn't for me, but I play games where the violence is moderate and usually incidental. "Oblivion" is about the most violent game I play. I'm sure if someone spends all their time playing Grand Theft Auto it's going to have an effect.

I believe it depends on the person who plays it. If a very depressed child plays one he might go a wall and be violent. But other wise I think it doesn't.
