that our government be ruled by people other than those that sell their legislation to the highest bidding corporate entities to the detriment of the people ?

People in the 1960's cared and fought hard for civil rights. I think if we cared more about the massive problems within our government, that we would be much more likely to see some change for the better instead of the worse. I think we as the masses are largely responsible for many of the problems, and that we need to account for them, and to become proactive rather than regressive. I think Hitler (or on of the ranking Nazi's) said something to the tune of, 'Thank God for the politicians that the masses are stupid', and lately, it seems that he was sadly correct.

The general public is blinded by the politicians' promises and distractions that they throw at us to keep us from debating the real issues.

Flag burning, gay marriage? These are issues that have absolutely no affect on the general population yet they are some of the most hotly debated topics. Why? Because if the government can keep our minds wrapped around trivial subjects then they can keep making deals with corporations and pumping money into their war machine.

The ANSWER is that we do care about what our government does. Its just that the government does a really good job at shifting our focus. They see us as a horse with blinders on, and they are the one's on top leading us to the glue factory.

So true, the US has forgotten what our brand of democracy represents. When we fight between ourselves, insult, berate and turn a blind eye to politicians that canoodle each other we deserve what we get. Unfortunately, the problems will manifest in our children and be cause for even greater discontent in our next generations.

The only logical answer is to head towards term limits so we might eliminate the career politicians who promise anything but produce nothing due to their cause which is, full time candidacy. That is, they are on the campaign trail looking for money to win the next election.

Most Americans fail to realize that a campaign pledge is not a true mandate for an electorate. They can say what ever they want while campaigning but are rarely, if ever held to that standard after taking office. As they owe their allegiance to other politicians, large contributors or special interest. The constituency no longer matters at that point.

There are inherent weaknesses in any form of government and you have identified one of the more glaring weaknesses in ours. In any society in which the vote is given to all, regardless of ones ability to discern, it becomes far easier to make each election more of a popularity contest than a distinction of issues. The average voters knowledge of issues in this country (and most of the world) is appalling, but no solution to this problem has been proven viable. We can’t simply wish the average voter was smarter, but what do we do? Should we test the political knowledge of the average voter? I would be in favor of filtering the right to vote down to people of knowledge via testing, but at the same time there must be an effort to get as many people into the pool as possible. If at that point nothing is accomplished on a seemingly obvious issue, perhaps it is not as obvious as we think…

Don't think too highly of people in the sixties. They are the same people who grew older and sold out to those corporate entities.

It IS sad. Maybe someday the masses will wake up and walk with us. It may take a while as they have grown complacent and apathetic. It will take something BIG. My fear is what that something is gonna be.
