Let's say that today is Monday, Jan. 1 and you want to have a meeting with someone on Friday Jan. 12. If I said: I will meet with you NEXT Friday, would you assume that I meant Friday, Jan. 5 or Friday, Jan. 12?

I would assume Jan. 12. However, I understand the confusion. The proper thing to say would be: "let's meet Friday week." But Americans don't use that expression much any more.

If it's Monday then "this Friday" is the one in the present calendar week, while NEXT Friday is the one in the following calendar week.

I would believe you are speaking of Jan 5, bcuz that is the very "next" Friday closest to the date you are setting an appt. If you want to talk about Friday the 12th speaking from Jan 1 in proper USA English context, you need to say, "The Friday after next".

Next Friday is the next Friday which would be Jan 5. Why would you use the phrase next Friday to mean the second Friday after today?

I would take it to mean Jan. 12. Next Friday would imply the Friday not part of THIS current week.

It is a little confusing though....

I would assume Jan 5th. Would be better to say I will meet with you THIS Friday if they meant Jan 5th.

anyway, if in doubt, call and ask.

People in general would conisder Jan 5th as THIS Friday and Jan 12th as NEXT Friday.
Would be simple to argue the point but pointless.

NEXT is just a shorter way of saying "Friday of next week" so I would assume Jan 12
Great question!

He'd assume the 12th because that Friday would be the 5th.

However, since you might just come across a dumbo, it's better to specify the date.
