The important thing is to find a teacher you feel comfortable with, so go for a 'consultation lesson' with a few different people to try out their style.
Going for singing lessons is great, you'll get so much more out of your voice by training it properly, as you can't hear yourself what you sound like. The sound you think you hear in your head when your singing isn't what comes across to the audience, so a teacher will help to bring out the best in your voice.
Expect things to feel and sound a little strange at first, until you get used to what the teacher is asking you to do. They should be able to give you useful exercises to improve your tone and breathing, and advise on repertoire too.
Have fun!

Yes I had singing lessons when I learned to play the harp. The vocal exercises really helped the tone and range of my voice. i would recommend lessons if you want to improve your voice.

One on one singing lessons are great for improving resonance, range and technique as long as the instructor is a trained professional - experienced voice coach or a speech-language pathologist. You may relate the speech therapist with stuttering or strokes but they are the true vocal chord and resonance experts, and may have equipment to allow you to see your vocal chords, throat, nasal and oral cavities.

Yes it was very helpful. I learned a lot about projecting from the diaphragm, control of vibrato, and increasing my range. I am no diva but at least I don't embarrass myself singing in public.

Sang well until I had lessons. Then started to think of what I was doing with my throat and couldn't hit a true note for ages afterwards.
Leave well alone hun.
