I have never stayed in a hostel, but spend about 3 months a year in hotels. I have never been asked to show ID in the UK.

There is no legal requirement to show ID on checking into UK accommodation, be it hotel, guesthouse or hostel. (Someone else said something about Interpol whichis the same nonsense that Dan Brown put in his books.)

But individual accommodation can make up their own rules, basically all they are interested in is that they'll get paid for your stay and any damage/thefts that may be caused. Most hotels ask for a credit card imprint.

all of the party - if you are a uk national it's purely for id purposes, if you are a foreign national it's so that interpol are aware of your whereabouts. i kid ye not. thats why when you go abroad from the uk you always have to present your passport at the hotel etc.
