Quite frequently I have to turn the programmerl on and off to gerk the gas valve (solenoid) into action. I have been unable to obtain a replacement for my 1973 Ideal Standard/Honeywell V800A1153. Is it possible that it just needs a clean and could my Corgi plumber do it easily?

I'm afraid that you will have to replace the valve complete. If an engineer messed about with it and it leaked he would be held responsible for the consequences. It would not be strait forward to replace the gas valve but could be done.
Now come on its 33 years old, its probably original and apart from the inefficiency of the boiler isn't it time the full boiler was replaced.

Have a look around the house. What else have you got that's been in daily use for the last 33 years? And don't say your wife !

I change my boiler at least every 15 years ( and the wife more often )

Your problem could be a sticking motorised valve. If you have these in your pipe circuit, it is a square shape with a silver colured cover. If you have these, you can check them by placing a screwdriver on them and the other end to your ear. If You then turn your programmer on, wait for about 30 seconds, and you should hear the motor in the valve opening the valve. If not, the valve will need replacing.

Sometimes its cheaper in the long run to replace the boiler. If your boilers 33 years old i 'd suggest you've had the best out of it. i know the saying that if it ain't broke why fix it and the answer is a modern condensing boiler would probably cost half the amount to run as the one you got now so you'd soon get your money back. Your just prolonging the enevertable and paying good money to repair something thats on its last legs.
