Yes. Once, briefly, and it was tethered. I think they were taking people up to raise charitible donations. I was a kid and was too fixated on the baloon to even notice what the charity was.

You can get free rides on hot air balloons in Albuquerque, once you are on a balloon-chasing crew. The commitment is just during the festival itself. Getting on a chasing crew is the least expensive and most fun way. I'm sure you can do this in other areas, just find a balloon crew. They are usually looking for volunteers. That is how I've ridden on one - no special occassion.

Yes, a number of times. I live in Albuquerque - "The hot air Balloon capital of the world", or so they say. I helped crew a few times and you usually get a few rides out of it.

yes I have! I got 2 tickets from my bf for my birthday but a few weeks later found out I was pregnant so had to put it off for a year. My bf was scared of heights so I took my best friend instead as she has always wanted to go in a balloon. We took off from Bristol and landed in Bath. It was such a magical experiences, sadly none of the other presents the bf has bought have lived up to that! If you every get a chance to do I highly recommend it!

for my mums 50th birthday we all chipped in and got her 2 tickets, she has yet to go up but is really looking forward to it.

Yes, it was a great experience. There was no special occasion, I just treated myself to the flight as it was the only type of flying that I hadn't tried.

My hot air ballon ride was a gift from my wife for my 50th birthday. It was an "n'LIGHT-ening" experience. I highly recommend it!
