the only difference between my messages and the fakes, is that mine prefix +44, but the fakes dont and begin with 0798...(my number)
how can we trace who sent them (although we have a good idea), and how do they do it?

dunno how to stop it, sorry, but at work we use an online texting service where you type in your message, enter the recipient's number, but can set it up so it says from 'my company' or to have a mobile number... would be dead easy to make it look like it came from a different number....
if it gets bad, phone her network provider. or the police.

I've got a french mobile phone and I can use the web to send messages to anyone. When I send messages from the web they don't carry the international prefix; when I send from my phone they do.

Possibly someone's created an account using your phone number and details on the web and is using some kind of web form to send messages from your phone. Do the messages appear on your bill or not?

Easily, someone can use one of the free text messaging services on the internet and put your number as the return number.

you can get a idea by seeing the message center number to find out what network it was sent on (details option)
