I would stay away from using water. We sweep up the dirt and then spray the floor with Windex and use a mop with a micro fiber to mop the floor dry. No streaks!

You did say hardwood floors and not the perigo stuff.. thus... PLEASE don't use products on the floors at all and only use terry towels to clean them. The self wringing mops leave too much water on the floors. That will water spot the floor and work between the boards and warp them. The results? A $1500 sanding and revarnishing job.

Use 1/2 cup of vinegar in a gallon of water. Rinse a towel in that and wring out all the excess moisture. Then you are ready to clean. I use a gallon jug that has had only water in it. Add 1/2 cup vinegar to that and then pour it on the towel to dampen. That way you don't have to mix the vinegar each time. To dust, take an old pair of panty hose and cut off the top of the leg. Slide that over a regular dust mop and you have an inexpensive "Swiffer".

Take my advice on this one. I have a new house. It took my a while to find the right way to do this. Try this, it's fast and it works. Home Depot carries this product that is for hardwood and laminate flooring (it's their name brand Zep) They also sell these mops that have a rectangular bottom on it, which has a terry cloth cover. All you do is sweep or vacumn your floor first, then use this Home Depot cleaner. You squirt on the cleaner, wipe with this mop, and that's all you do. The terry cloth is removable, so once your done, just throw it in the washing machine. I used to spend an hour doing my floors, now 15 minutes. i would recommend it to everyone.

I have to disagree with the ammonia and water. I have used straight ammonia to strip wood finish. Just simple vinegar and water and then dry with a mop or towel should work just fine. When I used to clean houses for a living, that is what we used on hardwood floors, both old and new.

ammonia vinegar water are a no no on a wood floor.
you dont want to warp the wood with water and you dont want to kill the varnish with ammonia or vinegar.
