I don't think make-up actually in the beginning was used for beauty. I believe it was and still is used for tribal communication in the west indies/southAmerica and also other tribes, such as Indians and other islanders.
Body paints and jewelry were used in many forms as functions in ritual dances/marriages/spiritual signs.
Camouflage paints to blend into nature, hunting and stealth were used, unlike our camouflage clothing and spyware are used nowadays.
I have read about occasions as far back as caveman times that they wiped bear/seal grease onthemselves and added charcoal from their fires or leaves or whatever was available to cover their bodies to attract prey or to hide themselves, prevent insect bites. Possibly over time this became habit for some and they started adding color with clay and sandstone to make a kind of cover or make-up to attract mates.
Hope this gives you different ideas of where make-up originally came from and how it was used.

Like mostly everything else in human kind it comes from sex. When a person is aroused or feels emotion your blood rushes to places all over your body. Lips get red-er and checks get rosy. This is sort of a natural sign to a mate. Well from then on it evolved into the industry we have today; but that in short is the begining.
-It was not war paint because That was meant to conceal. make-up is made to enhance.

Make-up originated in Egypt amongst prostitutes who put red coloring on their lips to accentuate and advertise their sexual specialty (oral). It was later used by royalty to highlight features and cover age lines. Unlike tribal body painting which predates make-up, the goal of make-up has always been to accentuate one's natural sexuality as opposed to covering it up. This tends to make people who use too much make-up look primitive or like a prostitute plying her trade

Women wanted to add color to the part of their body people see most, which is their face, to make themselves look more appealing to men.

Women wanted to cover up their blemishes. Sounds like false advertising.

It all started out as war paint and like everything else men have, women wanted it to. Now women use it to cover their wrinkles and face cracks so they don't scare us men.
