Dig the planting hole 2 to 3 times the width of the rootball. This will allow the roots to easily penetrate the surrounding soil as they grow. Plant the tree no deeper than the rootball. You absolutely want to avoid planting too deep as this can kill the tree in the long-run. At the time of planting ensure that there are no girdling roots growing around the trunk, they should be radiating away. Prune/remove any small roots that are girdling, these can also kill the tree in the future by cutting off water and nutrient transfer.
Plant the tree in a location that will allow it to grow to its full potential. Eucs can get very large so do not plant it too close to any structures and do not plant it underneath powerlines or other obstacles. Plant it in an area with sufficient soil surface area and volume. I suggest 920 (about 10x10) square feet of soil surface area per square foot of mature trunk diameter (at 4.5 feet above ground). You need a minimum of 2 feet of soil depth and a maximum of 3 feet soil depth to provide sufficient volume.
Be aware that depending on where you live your euc will not necessarily reach its full growth potential. For example, here in Las Vegas, our eucs typically grow to about half to three-quarters their full size potential, when compared to ideal sites in Australia and parts of California.

I'm in Australia and there are many types of eucalyptus. Not many grow to 150 ft, some only grow to 8ft so alot will depend on the variety you have bought.
Most like good drainage. Some come from rain forests and others from semi-arid areas. They are not all drought hardy.
If you have purchased a large growing variety be careful where you site it. They are indeed relatively shallow rooted and storms can bring down the whole tree. They also can drop whole branches as a means of survival if it gets too dry, so don't plant them so they can grow over buildings. The trick is to water them deeply from initial planting to encourage deep roots.
Care should be taken when fertilizing, fertilizers containing to much phosphorus can kill them. Use naturally decayed manures.
Most enjoy a full sun position and are very easy to grow. Be careful of frost when the plant is young.

"As far away from the house as possible" Good advice....Like on a different planet. You will learn the hard way I m sure, but Eucalyptus trees are the WORST thing you can have in your yard. It will eventually come down to a choice between 1: Having a nice lawn, OR 2: Having eucalyptus trees. Never will you have both. Talk to someone who has had eucalyptus near their yard, have some time on your hands because you are going to get an ear full. They are the Demonic tree.

Eucalyptus trees are, indeed beautiful. You say it is 9ft now. It could be a lot taller than that in a few years. I have just looked it up in my book. Some species (viminalis for example) can grow as high as 150ft with a 24 - 45ft spread. If you email me the species I will look it up for you and be able to give you the height and width. If you don't know the species, to be on the safe side I would give it plenty of room. Our neighbour has just had one taken down because it was absolutely massive.

you've just bought yourself a " nightmare " if you don't do your home work .
what do you want it for (i.e shade , a tree in your yard , or hopefully - in a pot )
like any plant -- you can do anything with it so long as you know what you are doing ( no offence ) .
I'd need to know more before i could help ( in a way that is fair to you in advice -- for which you are asking )
have another go at what you would like do with the tree -- in turn i might be able to help a little better ( and indeed anyone else )

As far away from the house as possible - they grow very tall very quickly and because they have shallow roots they can fall down easily in bad storms. They are also very flammable so you don't want to plant it anywhere near where you might have a barbeque.

i think you need to dig a nice hole comfortable for the plant about 2 feet deep depending how big or heavy the top is make that you drive at least 2 stakes to keep it balance so it will keep firm while it sets into place.
