Hello... =)

Well, in a phrase, we cannot......

YOU can prove that YOU have consciousness, by the fact that you think...."I think, therefore I AM"....but, you cannot prove that the rest of us exist at all. The rest of us may be all constructs of your consciousness, and there is no absolute way to prove otherwise. I know that I have consciousness, but from where you are standing, there is no way that when I say this, you don't know if I am an illusion which is lying to you or not.

Generally speaking, each of us perceives the world around us differently, depending on a number of "mirror cells" within the brain, which recognize and produce an image of the world for us. These "mirror cells" are not always entirely accurate, however, and can easily be fooled. It is when these mirror cells misfire and malfunction that we "hallucinate" -- a term that in its simplest form means that we do not perceive reality in even remotely the same way as the majority. In these cases, it is not always a proper view to assume that the majority is correct, however, from a purely philosophical standpoint.

As to "where" you are, one must always consider the fact that you are in a place, with a name, that is in a fixed position relative to the face of the earth. But, the earth is not in any sort of fixed position...for example, we perceive that it is moving around the sun at some 3000 mph, and spinning as well. Additionally, our solar system is moving away from the center of the galaxy, and the galaxy is moving away from the center of the universe, both at speeds which are difficult to calculate, but are very fast.

So, being "here" is a very difficult thing to truly grasp as an abstract, even if reality is an objective viewpoint, which, as we earlier mentioned, is kinda on shaky ground to begin with.

So, all in all, one must make certain assumptions about "reality" in order to function, or else you may as well just sit on your sofa and watch television for the rest of your life, for all the difference it would make.

That is sort of the Buddhist take on reality as well....a dualistic nature....everything is illusory in nature, but yet, we must assume it all to act as if it were real, or life would become very difficult. It's called "ultimate truth"--that all things are illusory in nature, and "conventional truth" -- that we must assume that things work as they appear.

Namaste,

--Tom

You mean, how do we know we're not all just part of the dream of some sponge on the bottom of the ocean?

I guess that's where faith comes in. ?

Well, I know that I am here because I can see what I am typing in reply to your question. If I wasn't here, I wouldn't be able to see these words, would I?

I believe that I am here but can not prove it.
On what level do you want to prove it?

Do you want to know if you can hear? Or if you are here?

I'll answer your question when I know which one you're asking, or when you learn to spell.
