The law state`s that you must inform your employer on the first day of sickness ( This can be done by telephone )
If your off 7 day`s or less Then you have to provide a self certified sick note .
After one week has elapsed you have to provide a sick note from the doctor!

Seriously, to cover your *** it is best to notify an employee or a manager that you are not feeling well and need to see a doctor. This way if you are missed, they know where you are. Always bring doctors note after being ill, this may be handed in after 24 hours of seeing your doc.

The above rule falls away if you are involved in serious injury and can't contact your work, because you are out cold or dead. Then maybe a responsible friend or sibling or parent can put a word in that you are not available to work for some time. This will give the Human Resource department time to find a replacement if you can't make it or don't make it back. Isn't life grand!

Usually, your contract will state how long it should be before you notify your employer of illness.

Waiting 3 days would be considered absent without leave, which means that you could end up not being paid for the time you are off.

Notifying your employer as soon as possible is always the best way, and you can be "self certified" sick for up to 10 days before usually needing a doctor's note.

I would have phoned in before I should've been there but that's because I'm a teacher so need cover, plus I think it's just polite. I think the only reasons you can give for not phoning in are you've been taken to hospital, passed out or some part of you is stuck in the banisters.
If you're planning on lying to your boss then make sure it's something you can back up and don't make it too elaborate. Stick with the 'my head feels like a brick and my whole body aches' routine, because if you go too far they'll expect a doctors note or don't go far enough and they'll think your a baby. Whichever way you go phone in asap otherwise they'll think your just skiving.

You must inform your employer, at least one hour before work when you are sick, should be without repercussion but you know how that gos. you must do this every day of sickness,( by PHONE) direct do not have someone else call for you unless your in the hospital, after the third day you must have a doctors note, clarifying when you may return to work. fax it if you must.

You need to call in before you are due to start your duties on the first morning of illness, although an SMS is fine if you know your boss checks SMS.

Similarly, I tend to write in via email if I am ill, I sometimes send the email over the weekend knowing I won't feel like waking up on Monday morning to do the calling in.

Most employers expect to be notified at the earliest opportunity. It is something that is set my employers in their own sickness procedures normally.

You should be careful over this because if your employer does have a sickness policy or something similar, you could be subject to disciplinary action if you fail to comply without good reason.

I would check it out quick if I were you

All the employers I have worked for have expected to be told within half an hour of my start time that I am sick. That way they can arrange for other staff to provide cover.

Most companies request you contact them as soon as you realise you will not be attending wirk, usually within 1 hour of your shift start time, I worked with a guy who tried to call before we opened and could not get through so decided to e-mail instead, our boss did not appreciate the thought and he was disciplined for not taking proper care to advise us he was sick! Was so funny though! His e-mail basically read, too ill to work, vomiting, be back soon!
