This is WOOL, thus only use items that have been approved for wool. Water based products would not be good for the wool. I would recommend using a dry product like Capture. This is approved for Wool Carpets and works very good without damaging the fibers.

If that's efficient and has that a lot sentimental cost, i'd basically take it to a specialist carpet purifier, even perchance one which focuses on old or delicate rugs. probably received't fee an arm and a leg, and each and each rug would favor to be wiped clean from time to time besides. fantastically a wool one. dirty wool attracts insects that may thoroughly spoil a wool rug. If that's sufficiently small on your dad to have carted all of it the way from NZ, that's sufficiently small to take out for cleansing.

There are a few good ways of getting stains out, there is the white vinegar method, just pour vinegar on Area let it soak a few minutes then wipe it, or try this I have even got red wine out with this one, pour white wine over the spot, then pour a pile of salt on top leave until the salt has drawn the stain into it ( about an hour) then simply vacuum the salt up, stain should be gone, good luck, and MERRY CHRISTMAS.

That first answer looks good- enzyme spot treatments (like that one) are great on coffee and tea stains- and the bottle will tell you exactly how to do it. Just be careful!

As far as a solution, vinegar is good. It will not damage anything, and when it evaporates it won't leave any traces in the carpeting.
