Some very fancy restaurants will ask for a credit card number when you make a reservation and require that you cancel a certain amount of time in advance. If you don't cancel and don't show up, they'll charge you a no-show fee.

At super upscale places in big cities maybe a credit card # to hold it, anywhere else, thier trying to scam you.
