The origins of Christmas are found in the pagan celebration of the sun, but the the Catholic church adopted many of the pagan rituals in effort to bring nonchatholics into their church. Hence changing birth of the "sun" to the birth of the "Son" ( that is Christ). So Christmas means Celebration of Christ.

Merriam Webster's dictionary to the rescue:

"Etymology: Middle English Christemasse, from Old English Cristes mæsse, literally, Christ's mass"

I would add Christ's mass or celebration, since the mass essentially performs the same function.
