I found a web. www.gapyearforgrownups.com.
There trips look amazing and I'd love to go to Africa to work with animals - has anyone done it alone and how did you get on? How safe did you feel? Did you 'find' yourself?

I suggest volunteering "on your own", or at least through a non-profit group. Why pay some company $4,000-$11,000 so you can volunteer? That's the the profit-seeking company you listed above asks for.

Plan it yourself, work with international aide organizations, get in touch with local groups to make sure you are prepared, and make it custom to you.

I have been in the Middle East since 2002.

Not quite what you were looking at, but I have been all over this area in the past several years...

Last year, in October, I went to the Himalayas to assist with the Earthquake Relief efforts in Pakistan. I felt safe and could not figure out why I had two Pakistani Special Services guards with submachine guns escorting me everywhere.

In late November I finally got to the point where I could talk to them and asked them what was going on, why they felt they needed to keep such close tabs on me.

They answered "Dear Sir, you are in Al Qaeda territory here... we do not want you to be killed by these bad men..."

I had honestly felt safe until that very moment, but looking back on it.. I always knew there was something wrong in the way some of the people had stared at me.

I knew I was helping out, and delivered over $3 million in aid and winter clothing.... but the terrorists in early December made the announcement that "people like this guy in Shinkiari are still American and we will still try to kill him".

I left three weeks later......
