At the airport this morning when we went to drop our Polish friends off and they gave me a present for my birthday this Friday and asked if I would open it, I was totally gobsmacked as its the new mobile phone I've had my eye on for a month or so, they are lovely generous people but I never expected a gift like that, gobsmacked I am.

I am gobsmacked everytime I log on her, some of the questions are incredible and then so are some of the answers. It used to be an interesting site, but it is getting disappointing.

I'm frequently Gobsmacked, but I hate the expression

I am never "gobsmacked" on principle as I detest this expression, it is so cliched. People use to describe winning the lottery and when they hear a relative has died. One of the father's of the murdered girls in Ipswich used it to describe his feeling on hearing his daughter was working as a prostitute, it seemed so wrong in that context. It is both over-used and vulgar in tone, and displays a chronic lack of imagination.

Alternatives include:

agape, agog, alarmed, amazed, appalled, astonished, astounded, awestruck, confounded, dismayed, dumbfounded, frightened, overwhelmed, shocked, startled, stunned, surprised, terrified, thunderstruck.

Around the early seventies in teenage discos in Norwich...usually by Lowestoft hard boys

Agree with you Chris...what an odd term to describe 'amazed' - was it not a saying of socio-economic C2DE's until (at a stroke) it was eventually used even by 'poshies'
