Greece, what a wonderful place. The classical era heritage is still evident in the city, portrayed through a number of ancient monuments and artworks, the most famous being the Parthenon on the Acropolis. Athens was the host city of the first modern-day Olympic Games and, more recently, of the 2004 Summer Olympics. YOU MUST SEE THIS SIGHT!!!,The Greek Parliament, located in Syntagma Square,Changing of the Guard Evzones in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Syntagma Square,The Athens Academy, located in central Athens, was designed by Theofil Hansen and completed in 1885. It is flanked by the National Library and the University of Athens, Zappeion Exhibition Hall and conference centre designed by Theofil Hansen. After this or during, lunch and/or dine in Central Athens.
Ways of getting there: Organise a cab at Athens airport or from hotel, if you are staying overnight. Also check with you travel agency about a 1 day tour cost, they will be able to tell you the cost for a cab to these destinations or a organised tour guide. A fantastic source of information while on travel is the "Let's Go" book, it gives you update prices of transport, accommodation, cuisine and information of each place you visit. Has won many awards
Have a wonderful holiday

First of all I must tell you that the El.Venizelos airport is not in the city of Athens so you will have to get a taxi and go to see the city! It is a great city and in Christmas looks much more appealing! You will head to the centre of Athens -Sintagma- and see the Greek Parliament and the busiest street of town,Ermou, heading down you will arrive in Plaka and Monastiraki from where you can see Acropolis the greatest ancient monument! Moreover you can choose to have lunch in Kolonaki or even in more touristic spots! You have many options.. Otherwise if you don't have at least 10 hours to do all the above you could go with taxi nearby the airport to Porto-Rafti which is a summer spot with incredible see, fish-restaurants and some coffee shops but make sure to make sure to call a taxi for the way back to the airport! I would highly recommend the first option!Have fun,Athens is a great city....

The Acropolis is the one historical site you can't miss. You can take a tour or wander up there yourself but during the summer, whatever you do, unless it is overcast, go early or late in the day. It can get very hot up there and gasping for breath can take way from your ability to marvel at the greatest of all archaeological sites. Getting to the Acropolis is easy and more pleasant than ever because the large avenues which border the south and west of the site (Apostolou Pavlou in Thission and Dionissiou Areopagitou in Makrianni) have been turned into giant pedestrian streets with cafes and restaurants and the walk is quite pleasant. From the Plaka and Monastiraki side it has always been a car-less, enjoyable walk and all you have to do is walk uphill from wherever you are and when you get to the top and there are woods instead of buildings, and steps, take a right.
Also try the Athens sightseeing bus #400 (hop-on, hop-off)

Have a nice day in the historical centre of Athens, visit the Acropolis and walk from there to Plaka, through the ancient Agora and Thiseio. All these are in walking distance, all around the Acropolis. Tube stations Acropoli, Thisio, Monastiraki and Syntagma give you access to those places.
Also, from the airport, there are bus and train links taking you to the city centre and the nderground, you don't need to take a taxi.
