Both my side and my husband's side of the family are doing Yankee swaps for Christmas. It is a per person set up, so we each bring a gift to each event, a total of 4 grab gifts. The money limit is $25.

Any ideas on something fun and original to bring?? I know there's always gift certificates and candles and stuff like that, but I wanted to come up with something really great.

Definitely look for things that are on sale.

If you have a list of everyone's name, address, phone number and email make a copy and enclose it with an address book and a nice pen or pen and pencil set. They can add the family entries themsleves into the book as well as their own list. Add a note that says something like, "For a day of snow, when there's no place to go."

A small fish bowl with accessories and a gift certificate inside for a tropical fish from your local pet store. Add a note that says, "Vacation in the tropics are a wish, but for now how about a tropical fish?"

Buy some kind of container or even decorate a cardboard box to look like a treasure chest and fill it will penny candy. Or you could fill it with Hershey's Treasures. On top place a card that says, "For you this wonderful treasure, to savor no matter what the weather!"

If you want, get something that is used outdoors in the summertime. If you have a small store where you live you might ask them if they have something in stock like a Frisbee, kite, sidewalk chalk, balls, jump rope, jacks - even balloons! Get a wooden crate from your local grocery store (free), add the summer things. Enclose a note, "In the summer when you go out to play, remember you got these Christmas Day!"

If you know someone who likes movies or books, those are always welcome. I personally do not even mind those items second hand and would not be offended in the least if someone gave me second hand ones.

But if you make a cute little poem with each gift, it makes for consistency in your gifts and it is something different!

Learn the value of a dollar and do not spend $20 for something worth only $15. The idea is to get bang for the buck. Ghirardelli chocolate is a good idea and is also certified Kosher. Tastes great too. Starbucks has a gift set of 3 different kinds of chocolate (chocolate covered expresso beans that you eat, almonds and cherries-- dried cherries). Better yet, it costs $9.95 so you hopefully won't go broke buying it. You can look for other Starbucks gifts but imho, the roasted coffee sets often are a waste bc many ppl don't have the time to use a coffeemaker to make the coffee.

The whole point of a Yankee exchange is in the presentation. You are supposed to pick up the gifts and shake them and feel them. You want to be tricky in the way you wrap it. For example give a gift card to a movie theater and wrap it in a big box you could put dried beans in it so when someone shakes it they will be baffled. Other good ideas are scratch off lotto tickets, a bottle of liquor, or a selection of your favorite DVDs. I love the scratch off lotto tickets I gave them one year and the person won $200! Now that's a great gift.
