the easiest way is (windows)
1. klik start
2. klik run
3. type [cmd]
4. a black screen will show up.
5. type [format c:] ; if you have several drives just type the drive name (C, D, E)
6. enter.
Why do you want to format it?
if you want to upgrade your OS there's an easier way but if it's because your comp keep crashing than it's okay.

Formatting your computer will erase everything on your hard drive. I mean every thing. Your operating system (windows) your boot files (DOS) all your folders, everything. so make back-ups of all the files you want to keep and have the boot discs and operating program ready to reinstall.
Your windows should be able to create a format disc for you. Just type in Format Disc in the windows help menu from the start menu.
Be careful.

Boot your system with a Win 98 bootable floppy disc.
At the command prompt type
format C: /q/s
Press Enter button.
if you want to format the C drive.
/q/s are optional, /q is for quick formatting and /s is to copy the syatem file to the active partition. You can only have one active aprtition. hence, while formatiing the other paritions, you should only use the command
format D: /q
or simply
format D:
if you want to have a full format and not a quick format.
To create a win 98 bootable floppy, download
Windows 98 BootDisk from

that is elementary to do in case you recognize what you're doing. besides the indisputable fact that that is elementary to stuff it up in case you do not. Do you've your unique XP cd waiting and your OEM quantity? in case you format and then don't have those, you also don't have a operating equipment. After that you'll choose a minimum of your modem drivers so that you'll come across the different motive force you do not have. more beneficial to be over prepared than cursing an inanimate merchandise.

Are you talking about formatting your hard drive? It is a destructive procedure, and will remove your operating system, your programs, and all your files. Don't do it unless you have software CD's and backups to put your computer back in working order.
