You are asking a very serious question, with potentially serious outcomes. . . and YOU are a returning/resurrected bogus account?
To those who are legit, and reading the answers given here . . .
If your child IS presenting with a yellowish skin cast?
Be certain your pediatrician has seen this, and made a determination as to the possible cause - and allow your professional to advise on treatment. . .
DO NOT assume that you know just what is wrong, or what to do to ameliorate the problem!!! regardless of what 'ole timey' yahoos suggest. . .
When an infant's billirubin count soars (causing a yellowish color to the skin), the results can be serious, permanent, brain damage - due to the lack of sufficient red cells (those that carry oxygen to the brain). . . if this situation is not remedied quickly? your child will not have adequate oxygen to the brain, and damage will result. Sun exposure IS NOT the answer. . .
Please go to your pediatrician . . . now.

It all depends on how yellow he is. If I were you I wouldn't give your baby water unless the Dr. said that it was alright. He is a new born and I am guessing only a week to ten days old by your post and I know that when you give a newborn baby water they choke on it because it isn't as thick as formula or breastmilk and they drink to fast and they wind up choking on it. Ask the Dr. first to make sure. As for the jaundice, you should probably call the Dr. and if he feels that your baby is too yellow they will have you bring in the baby and do a blood draw to check the hemoglobin levels to see if they are above normal or not. I have 4 kids and I am pregnant with my fifth and every one has been jaundice my first son I brought home and then we had to bring him back because he looked too yellow to me and they did a blood draw and he had to go back in the hospital for three days under the lights. My second and third son had to be in the neonatal unit for other reasons on top of the jaundice but they has to be put under the lights as well and had to have blood transfusion because it wasn't clearing up. My daughter who was born 2 years ago was also jaundice but, she was under the lights for the first 4 days and then I was able to bring her home and just let her bassinet sit in front of a window to get natural sunlight. Let your baby get some sun from the blinds or curtains being opened but call your Dr. and ask if you can get the babies bilirubin level taken to see if they are low enough to keep from going under the U.V. lights.Good luck to you .

Was he yellow in the hospital?
Usually right after you have your baby they check for jaundice. My baby didn't develop it until AFTER we left the hospital and then it just skyrocketed and she had to be put in the bili-bed. It was really hard on me!
I suggest you call your pediatrician, or whoever the baby's doctor is, and get their blood tested for it.
Usually after the 8th day, I think, the biliruban goes down and they become better, but there are rare cases where it can be very serious.
I suggest putting baby in as much natural light as possible and bright lights. This helps a lot!

When you left the hospital did they ask you to come back for a follow up? My son had Jaundace when we left the hospital and I had 2 follow ups with in the first 2 weekswhere they took blood to make sure the numbers were going down.
I think you should call the pediatrician's and bring him in for a check up.

My daughter was jaundice 2 days after she was born. He needs UV lights if you can put him naked by a window that has direct sunlight and make sure he is getting plenty of fluids either breastmilk and/or formula. The best thing to do is go to the Dr. You DO NOt want this condition to go on much longer.

Have you been taking the baby for the blood tests to check him out? Have the prescribed a Billy Blanket yet? Maybe you should find a new pediatrician if hes not doing anything for you... good luck

my son had jaundice also. my doctor said to put him in front of a window so he could get sun. his eyes still had a yellow tint to them when he was two months old so don't worry, it will go away eventually. if the doctor thought it was bad he would have given you a special blanket with lights on it to help get rid of the jaundice.

As everyone else said, it sounds like he is jaundiced. Honestly, call your pediatrician. The nurse will evaluate your situation over the phone.(They're used to pannicked parents) At least you know that the nurse has some medical training as opposed to the rest of us jokers on Yahoo.

Go to the hospital, its nothing so serious but needs medical attention. They might need to put the baby in a chamber with enough sunlight or ultraviolet rays.

Give him some water. A lot of newborns have this and it's just because their total liver function hasn't kicked in yet. In the old days we were told to never feed a newborn iron fortified formula for this reason. Now it seems that this is what even the hospitals use and this happens all the time. Newborns don't need iron at first. Water flushes out the liver and the yellow goes away.
PS this is something that is little known in this day and age but all the really old timers know that it's true.
