Like most people I do a lot of my Christmas shopping on line, this year I've had quite a bit go missing. Ordered 5 dvds from play.com, received 3. Ordered 3 console games, received 2. Ordered 1 box of expensive chocolates, not received at all.

Then finally this morning was the last straw, a relative sent my son a card with a £10 note inside, the card had been opened with a knife or letter opener and delivered like that with the money gone.

Is this happening to anyone else here? Just how much stuff is being stolen by Royal Mail staff?

Does anyone here work for the Royal Mail? Maybe you can tell us the true story??

Patricia G, well I've lost so much stuff this Christmas then who do you think took it? The Christmas Fairy? I never suggested all postal workers are thieves, but there are a minority of crooks who are taking the p*ss out of us normal hardworking people at an expensive and stressful time of the year. And you should stop whining about the job you do, no one is holding a gun to your head to do it. Anyway don't forget all the perks you get at Chritmas time! LOL

This was bound to happen when the royal mail decided to start emplying more agency staff to do its work. No offence to the majority of agency workers but when some people know they're only going to be at a company for a short period of time the temptation for them to take what they can is too much.
It sounds like you have a particulary bad case of this theft going on so make sure you complain strongly to the royal mail, maybe at least, someone may have a word with the sorters and mailman who deal with your address and they may leave you alone.
I would say considering the amount of mail delivered the majority of mail workers are honest but a minority can do a lot of damage.

About the only thing you can do is to lodge a complaint with Royal Mail although knowing how the mail system actually works there is not much you can actually do. About the only time a postie will get dismissed is if they have been found by the Postal service to be opening mail and stealing money or burning mail but that is something that happens from within the postal service and can only be proven when evidence is found.

I have little faith in royal mail actually for the same reasons, my package has not been received at my house even though the post office say it has been signed for at my house, total rubbish, whats more annoying is that they dont consider, items lost until 15 days have passed and then the sender has to contact royal mail to instigate an investigation, they have it totally the wrong way around, staff can basically get away with it because the system is crap, sorry probably not much use though, just a satisfying rant

So sorry to hear about your recent losses, it does seem the 'Royal Mail' are not doing their jobs properly - I moved house sometime ago and had my mail re-directed which I paid a lot of money for, anyhow to get to the point a relative abroad sent us a parcel and because it was addressed to 'The' and family name it was returned! Just because it didn't have Mr and/or Mrs!
They are supposed to be qualified staff, qualified in what I have no idea!

Happy New Year to you and yours.

Do you know how hurtful it is to keep acusing us postladies/men of stealing your items. We work so hard all year round. We deliver in all weathers conditions, have our hands ripped off my vicious letter boxes, chased by vicious dogs, whose owners insist they do not bite and when they do, say he's/she's never bitten before. Try to deliver a parcel. Take it to neighbours, family at customer's request. Help people, give people directions. Have to push our way through overgrown hedges, clamber over bikes on paths, blocked guttering pouring rain over us when we try to put letters in the door. Deliver letters with wrong address etc., to the correct houses. Trace letters with sometimes only the first name on it and the village. Then what happens, something goes missing in the post and guess what we must have stolen it. A lots of the parcels are badly wrapped and get broken or damaged in the machinery. Yes, we will deliver what remains of the package/parcel it is better than nothing and the person who sent the package/parcel has to make a claim. I know there are some crooked people who do steal (they are usually in the big mail depots where the mail is sorted before it goes to the sorting offices). There are crooks in all walks of life. 99.999% of us are honest, law abiding citizens who work very hard, who enjoy our jobs and helping people. So many of Royal Mail staff do voluntary and charitable work. We are lucky, most people appreciate us, it's a shame people like you accuse us. Shame on you.

What perks are those then. Do you mean the £60 christmas bonus? That's about £40 after tax and the 25 stamps we receive, I am very grateful. The other things which are very, very, very important to note. We no longer deliver all the mail or parcels (Govenment took the monopoly away from Royal Mail a couple of years ago). There are lots parcel delivery companies out there everywhere and they too are delivering parcels and letters, including dvds. These companies
very often just leave parcels on the doorstep in full view of passers by and these can and are stolen. Guess what, we get the blame for them too. Royal Mail is in a no win situation. We get the blame whether we have delivered the mail, parcel or not. If I happen to be delivering the mail, I always ring the doorbell (not part of my job, of course, do it as an act of kindness),if they are not in, I cannot do anything with the parcel as it is nothing to do with Royal Mail, so it gets left there. I am not wingeing about my job, I love my job, but there are some very thoughtless people out there who make my job and others very difficult and dangerous sometimes. Many colleagues who started Royal Mail for the first time, were just like you, think the job's easy and that we are a load of thiefs. You should try it for a day, you will have your eyes opened. I too have not received letters or parcels. I naturally do not assume that they are stolen, but that they have got lost. This happens with the amount of mail Royal Mail are handling. The guy who mentioned the Casual workers that Royal Mail took on during the changeover a couple of years did cause a lot of damage. Yes, there were organised gangs of thieves, but it was nothing to do with us. As I said before, the Postman/woman at the bottom of the chain very rarely steals anything. Every now and then, you here about one who does and this is so sad, but it is uncommon. Royal Mail has it own security and if there are complaints about letters going missing etc., they will watch the postman/woman (not being seen of course,) and they can just turn up at your house, car with a Police Officer and search everything. We have to go through Security checks. What more can Royal Mail do.

As far as I am aware, Royal Mail does have security cameras in these big sorting offices.

Did you watch, 'Tonight' with Trevor McDonald last week, you will have seen for yourself how much is stolen by the Royal Mail workers if you did, one worker was actually seen putting CD packages into his pocket and was reported several times by his co-workers and nothing was done until the sixth time he was reported, DVDs are stolen like sweeties from a child, apparently dodgy people are getting jobs with the Royal Mail just to scam packages while they work, I am sorry your son had his Christmas money stolen from his card, that is totally disgusting, I hope you've made a severe complaint about it.

A lot of thefts happen within Royal Mail and only a few cases make the news headlines if they have been taken to court.

My partner lent someone her Makro card and she posted it back to us. It took a week and had been opened. When they found it had no value (i.e. not a bank or credit card) they resealed the envelope and sent it on it's way.

They should have CCTV everywhere royal mail go.

A few years ago my gran sent my son cash (stupid i know) and it was stolen.
