I have several friends taking up the computer scene while I chose to stray away and take up mechanical engineering. Either way, you're dealing with computers, but my passion for cars has surpassed my passion for computers and I'll try to merge them in a car someday so that they're seemless to a user.

In terms of jobs, there are more computer jobs out there, so the possibilities are easily seen, but its also a boring job and highly competative. Mechanical engineers don't necessarily have to go straight to a car maker, they could start with plane makers/ rocket makers/ motorcycle makers, all acceptable applications of essentially the same concepts used in cars.

The answer for question on mechanical packages are inline of Computer Eng is both 'Yes' and 'No'. If you are end user of mech packages, it is purely mechanical, where you will be doing design & analysis; where as if you are developer of mech packages, then it is a combination of comp engg & mechanical engg.
