Well, there are three main Awarding Bodies (i.e. exam boards) - AQA, Edexcel and OCR. Each body offers hundreds of different AS/A2 exams at each session - summer and winter.

AQA, for example, might timetable their Chemistry Foundation AS unit for June 12, a.m. This means that any school who chooses to follow AQA'a syllabus will HAVE to hold their exam on that date and at that time. However, OCR may have timetabled their Chemistry Foundation unit for June 18, p.m. - again, any school following OCR's syllabus will have to hold the exam on that date and at that time.

So, dates for similar subjects may differ between bodies, and whichever syllabus the school is following, they must adhere to that body's timetable.
