Later when the Communist wanted to crowd out religion they started the May Day celebration to push it out of the way.

In India it is observed as Labourer's Day following the Russian communist's tradition(probably after Lenin----Nehru's legacy)It is a Government of India declared holiday-I do not know who are Tories who oppose it

May first is an ancient Gaelic holiday. Known as Beltane, it was celebrated in Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man. The holiday marked the beginning of summer.
