As a midwife myself I can tell you that some doctors would tell you not to look for a midwife, however I think that the experiances most women have birthing somewhere other than a hospital make the event of their child's birth that much more incrediable! (Don't get me wrong there is a time and a place for hospital births but I happen to think that home-birthing centers or home births are much more intimate and enjoyable in the long run) But I'm rambling... La Leche is a great program and can offer names and phone numbers of midwives in your area... There is also www.americanpregnancy.org which can help you find a midwife, lastly I would suggest that if this is your first baby that you contact your local hospital and ask if there are any midwives that work in connection with that hospital, this is always helpful in case a need should arise (And I will pray it never does) that you would have to be transfered to the hospital to complete the birth.

Also a suggestion, once you get in contact with a midwife make a list of things you can think of that you would want to have or be done during your labor and birth.. Do you want alot of family to be present? Do you want a water birth or not? Are there any customs or traditions in your family or culture that you want to be observed? And so on... It is very important that your desires are known so that you can find a midwife who will comply with your requests and who you can be completely comfortable with.. This is above all else critical!! Your comfort and trust in her should be her main goal.. Good luck and Congratulations!!!

Try calling your local La Leche League Leader. She can probably give you the names of some local midwives or refer you to some other moms who have used midwives who can make some recommendations.

You can also try calling doulas or childbirth educators. Your doc MIGHT know some, but many are "anti-midwife" so you might not get any recommendations.....of the ones he recommends might be more "med-wife" than midwife. If you want a hospital birth with a midwife, call your hospital and ask what midwives have privledges there.

Do an online search for midwives with the name of your city and state.
