Hurst is a company owned by the mother company Mr. Gasket, that builds shifters for competition use. They are an aftermarket company, and manufacture many other accessories for the racing industry. Check them out at their website. www.mrgasket.com/hurstmain.html The Hurst shifter is well known in the racing world as a leader in manufacturing shifters that are the best on the market, and can take the beating that stock shifters can't. Many car manufactures in the muscle car days used Hurst shifters in their cars. These are floor mounted and replaces the standard factory shifter that come in straight drive vehicles or stick shift vehicles. The reason they are so popular is; they are made solid, give very little trouble, look good, and will take a beating when applied to the very hard shifting required to win on race day. They must be very good or else the auto manufactures would have used their own shifters rather than an aftermarket brand. This shifter showed up in many different brands of muscle cars in the "60's", and is still considered the best when it comes to competition.
Glad I could help you. Good Luck!!!

Hurst is the brand of a floor shifter that can still be bought yet today. There are many types of this shifter in use. Any car parts store should stock them. The T-handle that is an accessory can cost up to 25.00. Mr. Gasket also sold similiar types of shifters. I have what is called a vertical gate shifter on my 69 mustang. It is a speed shifter, and and there is no H patern, like almost all of the shifters made today for manual transmissions. It has 3 handles on it. One of them is the main shift handle, and there is another handle where your fingers will fit into 2 loops that is used to pull the shifter into the first gear posistion. After that, its just a pull pack and push forward and pull back to go through the gears. It also has another handle that is called the reverse lock-out feature, in which the main shifter handle must be in the neautral posistion, then you can pull this smaller handle back to put it into reverse. That is the only way you can get the car into reverse. It is impossible to back up unless you use this small handle with a black ball on it. Hurst and MR. Gasket were the big names in shifters in the 60's and 70's. You can still get the Mr. Gasket shifter on ebay, but no parts houses that I have visited even carry that brand anymore. If you want to see what they look like, just go to ebay, and type in the names.

back in the day, Hurst made accessory shifters that made shifting a four speed easy. Oldsmobile made a model of cutlass called a Hurst Olds. it was a fine ride that really flew. It had a hurst shifter in it and this was a real marketing idea.. but since the age of small aluminum transmissions and no linlage shifters, the improvements a Hurst shifter were nonexistant.

A hurst shifter is a customizing accessory. It replaces the floor mounted shift lever in your car. The main advantage is appearance, but depending on model, they can also give you shorter shift throw. For automatic transmissions, the hurst shifter gives an appearance similar to a manual shifter.
