Edit (response to Gaz): "1 and 9 trillion trillionths is still less than 2.... " -- Gaz, 1 and 9 trillion trillionths is 10, which is somewhat larger than 2. The fact that you can simply look at the integer part (where the integer parts are not equal) depends on the fact that the fractional part is less than 1. If it is not, as in your example of 1 + 9,000,000,000,000 / 1,000,000,000,000, then you must account for the fractional part in your calculations.

Two (2) is always greater than one (1) unless you have a number like 1 9/6 because that would equal 2 1/2.

the rule of thumb is that the bigger the denominator the smaller the fraction. So a million/4 < a million/2. in case you extremely do not understand, convert each little thing to a elementary denominator. The LCM of two, 3, and four is 12 a million/2 = 6/12 a million/3 = 4/12 a million/4 = 3/12 and also you may see that a million/2 > a million/3 > a million/4

Substitute the words...'and a bit' for the 2 fractions.
You see straight away the 1st number is 2...and a bit
And the other number is 1...and a bit....
DO you see....2 will always be greater than 1....doesn't matter about 1's fraction...it will always be less than 2....
1 and 9 trillion trillionths is still less than 2....

it all started in the 1st grade. they told me that the number 2 was higher than the number 1. and i believed them. it has paid off thru my life. when i asked for 1 of something, i got offered 2 and it was more. now, whenever i buy something, i always get 2.
