you have to put the country code in first, as you would a landline number

Are you phoning from your mobile or landline? Some mobile companies have trouble connecting mobile calls.
So if it is a mobile call try using a landline and get the people in aus to check their moble companies and they will be able to check if your mobile company will work.

drop the first zero and prefix it with the international access code (00 in Ireland) and then 61 which is the access code for oz. so it'll be +6142 xxxxxxxx ok? good luck!

you put +61 then miss off the first 0=+6142 then the rest of the number.
