Most of the jokes on Sardarjis are coined by Sardars only. Sardars are jolly/lively fellows and take delight in rejoicing at any cost.

I like Sardarji jokes and the Sardarjis, who reel out such jokes, never offended for being the butt of ridicule. It is a great quality to poke fun at your own self. How lively and down to earth these people are!

Here are some sites for Sardarji jokes.

With due respect for their community and culture,
The sardars were called the mad Indians by the Britishers as they were the greatest rebels of the country. They used to fight for freedom in the night by doing what the rebels do, break windows etc... Even now, one could have noticed that the maximum number of soldiers from one community is theirs. Since then, continuing the mock of the Britons, we began using them for cracking jokes.

But it could may not also be that philosophical. They could have started like what the mumbaiites do now. They make fun of either a sardar or tamilian. Similarly, it would have continued being made fun of. It is just like the usage of blondes as a mock in the US. Anyway, there is a man called Khushwant Singh who is the veteran of sardar jokes, he himself being one.
Everyone in India does not mean to make fun of a sardar, but it just becomes a habit. They dont think of all the history of the origin of the joke, they just enjoy the joke and have a laugh.
