That is because the liquid jacket around a water-cooled engine attenuates the noise of the combustion and mechanical vibrations within.
Two of the good things about air cooled engines is that as they are simpler, they are much easier to maintain yourself, and you don't have to worry about coolant leaks and air locks.
Hope this helps.

The water jacket around the cylinders of a water cooled engine suppress the noise remarkably well. Also, air cooled engines tend to be and older design and are less "refined" as water cooled engines as they were designed more for propulsion, and less thought about noise.

Some of the above are good - also, air cooled engines have many more open areas for sound to escape from - in order to accommodate more air flow. This makes them seem louder.

This is because the air cooled dissipates less heat than the water cooled and the increase in temperature of the the combustion leads to knocking (abnormal combustion) in air cooled engine.......This is the reason they make greater noise..

easily each and every Harley with the production facility exhaust equipment left on my own isn't any louder than a typical vehicle exhaust. they're almost as quiet as a Honda Goldwing if no longer as quiet with the production facility mufflers. the undertaking is maximum Harley vendors get rid of the production facility mufflers and run directly pipes without muffler in any respect. Then they're puzzled why people supply them grimy seems and shoot them the finger.
