My son seems to cry and get bored whenever we aren't entertaining him. He's only 8.5 mths old. He isn't crawling or cruising yet. He can roll over, sit, get up and rock on all fours, slide backwards on his belly, but he doesn't want to be on the floor for more than 5 min unless we are playing with him. He has tons of toys but he seems to be bored of them. Is it normal for the parents to spend all day entertaining the baby?

no you shouldn't entertain your baby all day long. place some toys infront of him so he can choose and play with them not too many though, give him a plastic bowl and spoon to hit the bowl with or something musical

It is normal because that is what you do. He needs to learn how to entertain himself for short periods of time. Try leaving him on the floor with something new to see out of his reach, that might encourage him to explore a little on his own without you being there to entertain him. It's he cries for a few minutes that's okay, once he realizes you are not going to jump right down and play with him, it will encourage him to find something (the new toy) to amuse himself with. Just don't leave him crying on the floor for a long period of time.

you need to let him be with himself for periods of time. he knows after 5 minutes if he starts crying your gonna come running and play and that is why he does it. the best thing to do is make sure he is safe and somewhat comfy on the floor and still talk to him but do not pick him up and do not get down on the floor. he needs to learn to play on his own and the only way to do that is to make him. he will cry for a while but after 20 minutes or so then pick him up and either console him if still crying or praise him if he played for most of it. good luck and remember it is ok for a child to cry it wont kill him but may drive you crazy for a day or two till he gets it. happy holidays=)

You should keep at trying to have him entertain himself. Do you have an exercaucer you can put him in? They usually have lots of toys on them, or you can put your own on them.
