i have a compaq presario v2000 which came with a partitioned hdd, of about 7.5gb and 6.8gb are used upon start up for recovery, problem is certain app. wont run because my hdd reads as 85% full,i have an 80gb ext. hdd but it's not considered. and i've not been terribly successfull at resizing the partitioned area, fragged everything insight with all three attempts. but i'm learning fast "crash course" if you will.

The drive is 7.5gb total and 6.8 are used for restore? That doesn't sound right (nor good.)

Unfortunately you can't "extend" the primary drive size using the external drive. You can remove or possibly resize the recovery partition using software such as PartitionMagic. Your options, I think, are to

1) Clean up your temp files and delete unneeded ones
2) Try to install the software on the external drive if it'll give you that option
3) Swap the external drive for the internal one
4) Get a bigger internal drive
