It should be kept when the Queen is on official business, similar to 'Hail to the chief' being played in the company of the American president. We certainly need an English anthem. Land of Hope and Glory is good, though it smacks of jingoistic Conservatives. England by the Angelic Upstarts tends to lose accuracy by using the line 'There'll never be any colours like the red, the white and the blue' in its chorus. Three Lions is great but would need to be rewritten to take the theme away from football. Maybe Jerusalem's the best bet. As for the United Kingdom (as opposed to Great Britain), I Vow to Thee my Country could be ideal as you could be Scots, Welsh, English or count yourself as simply British in your thoughts when singing it, whether about British Unity or your individual country. Even the Ulstermen could sing it under that logic as the Republicans and Unionists could also sing it with pride whether the former are singing about Ireland or the latter singing it about Britain.

I like the USA's rewording of "God Save the Queen":
My country tis of thee
Sweet land of liberty
Of thee I sing
Land where our fathers died
Land of the Pilgrim's pride
From every mountain side
Let freedom ring!
Much better than "God, save the Queen/King"

they don't seem to be? no person sings it or maybe knows all the words besides, plus its greater in regards to the Queen than God and that i'm useful a useful person might have not have been given any undertaking with wishing somebody nicely, despite if it calls on a determine they see as basically symbolic or mythological to do it. (ok and sorry to the consumer up there, cant remember the call, yet i think of they meant England is traditionally a protestant united states of america, subsequently the reality that the Queen is the top of the Church of england. )

It should be Land of Hope and Glory.
I considered I Vow to Thee, My Country, but the second verse is a bit of a clash, namely:
"And there's another country, I've heard of long ago,"
...
"We may not count her armies, we may not see her King;
Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering;"
This in my opinion points to other countries in the UK and so should be a UK national anthem (especially since the english killed the welsh king Llywelyn, how apt).
Or England could compose something new representing the sentiments of the nation.

I think its sad that England does not have a national anthem. Land of hope and glory is far to jingoistic.
Rule Britannia is about ..errr Britain not England. How can you have an anthem which isn't even about your country?
Jerusalem fits the bill perfectly, recognisable tune, great words (bring me my arrows of desire, bring me my chariots of fire) and not too offensive to other countries.
As for a British anthem? Any of the Scots, Welsh or Irish anthems will do. Anything is better than God save the Queen (ad nausium)

Jerusalem is good but wouldn't fit all religions. I vow to thee my country is also good though but couldn't something new be writen intended to represent Britain or England. Anything would be better than God save the Queen though, it doesn't even represent the country at all.

I vow to thee my country was played at Diana's wedding, when she walked up the aisle. I have no loyalty to her or to the rest of Charles' family. It would be tacky and reminiscent of the last night of the bloody proms.
