It depends greatly on where you are in Britain. London is the most expensive city in the world. Anywhere down south is pretty bad too. Here in Edinburgh you can rent a 1 bedroom flat in the centre of town for about £500 per month. Less outside of town, more down south. Council tax will be about £100 per month. A room in a shared flat will be more like £250. Gas and electricity will be about £40 per month. A land line phone is £15 per month + cost of calls. B&Bs are going to be about £20 per night for a month & hostels more like £15 I would think.

If you eat very cheaply and buy food from the grocery store you can buy a week's worth of food for £28, but I usually budget more like £40 for the weekly shop for me alone.

I don't own a car, but insurance on a cheap model would be at least £300 per year I would think and petrol is approaching £1 per litre. You can rent cars for about £15 per day + petrol & taxes.

If you are eating out, I'd budget £30 per day. Train fares vary a lot anything from £6 to £100 depending on how far you are going.

I hope that all helps. Its very expensive here!

PS depends if you are living or travelling. If living I would say £800 if travelling then more like £1500. I think the people above have under-estimated.

It really depends where about. The cost of living is more expensive in the cities, with London the most expensive.

If you want enough money to go out, buy some clothes and CDs and stuff £800 is the minimum,
And for London it will be like £1000.

South East England, you are looking at around £600/month for basic rent, food and bills in a nice area.

I live in London and my total bills including entertainment never go above £600 a month. My friends out of London are living even cheaper, a family of 3, their rent is £350 including bills.

It will depend on where in England you will want to live. The north is a lot cheaper than the south.

if you plan to travel a little and stay in hostels it will be quite cheap - hostels vary from £6-15per night. although living 'normally for a month would cost a good £600 my advise is if its just a month - hostel it!!!
