Homicide – The killing of one human being by the act, procurement, or omission of another. The act of a human being in taking away the life of another human being. A person is guilty of criminal homicide if he purposely, knowingly, recklessly or negligently causes the death of another human being. Criminal homicide is murder, manslaughter or negligent homicide.

Homicide is not necessarily a crime. It is a necessary ingredient of the crimes of murder and manslaughter, but there are other cases in which homicide may be committed without criminal intent and without criminal consequences, as, where it is done in the lawful execution of a judicial sentence, in self-defense, or as the only possible means of arresting an escaping felon. The term “homicide” is neutral; while it describes the act, it pronounces no judgment on its moral or legal quality.

The preceding is from “Black’s Law Dictionary.”

The following are thoughts on same from our cultural past:

“Murder, though it have no tongue, will speak
With most miraculous organ.”
Shakespeare: Hamlet, II.

“Murder is when a person of sound memory and discretion unlawfully killeth any reasonable creature in being, and under the king’s peace, with malice aforethought, either express or implied.”
Edward Coke: Institutes, III, 1628.

“When there has been a murder committed an apparition of the slain party, accusing of any man, altho’ such apparitions have oftener spoke true than false, is not enough to convict the man as guilty of that murder; but yet it is a sufficient reason for magistrates to make particular inquiry whether such a man have afforded any ground for such an accusation.”
Cotton Mather: The wonders of the Invisible World, I, 1693.

“Every unpunished murder takes away something from the security of every man’s life.”
Daniel Webster: Argument in the trial of Joseph White, Salem, Mass., 1830.

“I wonder why murder is considered less immoral than fornication in literature.”
George Moore: Confessions of a Young Man. XI, 1888.

Homicide does NOT mean murder. Homicide simply means the "killing of one human being by another human being." There are different forms of homicide such as murder and manslaughter. The above definition is a common law definition and may be codified by statute in your state, but NEVER assume that homicide = murder because you would be wrong.

If you intentionally kill another human being in valid self defense then you have committed a homicide...it is merely justifiable. Murder is never justified.

in the uk, and in its strict definition , homicide does NOT equal murder. it is actually unlawful killing. this is very similar to murder , but you can have homicide and not murder in the followinf situations (HOmicide Act 1957) when someone kills someone else but has been provoked to it.; or when someone suffeing from diminshed responsibilty kills someone else; also if someone kills someone as aprt of a suicide pact then this is homicide but not murder. and finally if a mother suffering from post natal depression kils her child (under the age of one) is guilty of homicide not murder. these situations are commonly called voluntary manslaughter

"HOMOCIDE" is a slang term used when a person in a homosexual relationship kills their partner, usually during a "lover's quarrel".

It is also a common misspelling of the word "HOMICIDE".
