Ants want to chose a place to burrow the mud which is loose to store its grain, sometimes it tries to crawl the trunk of the tree and go for the fleshy part of the fruits which has a nice hole , they not only eat the fleshy part of the fruit but also drink the little nectar it gets from it.

Simply 'coz if it wants to get to the other side of the tree it can't walk straight inside the tree by making huge holes(subway) and get to the other side
