mathematics is very important in our day to day life... simplemaths happens all the time all around us... working out whether your pay is correct involves maths, working out if you have enough money to buy what you want involves maths.. that is for simple maths... slightly more complicated maths is involved i following recipes in the kitchen... it is involved in calculatiing how much chlorine you put in your pool.. how much food is the right amount to feed your dog or cat... doctors use maths to work out how much medicine to give you and at what dose.. the pharmacist uses maths in making the medicine up... the grocer uses maths to work out how much money he will make on each box of vegetables.. computers are based entirely on maths... and only two numerals..

In science maths is the basis of all sciences.. here in Australia the CSIRO has recently been complaining that not enough students are studying maths at University to fill the need for their research programmes...

Farmers use maths to work out how much fertiliser to place on each acre (hectare) of land, how much water is enough to make their crop grow... how much water they need for their stock to drink.. how much vaccination dose to give their stock...

So people who work with animals need to be good at maths..

Social Research is based on maths, in particular statistics, with no maths there is no social research...so people who work with people need to be good at maths...

horticulturists and gardeners need maths to know how much pesticide to mix with water to make the right amount, they need to know how to weigh and measure plant growth, they need to know how much fertiliser is the right amount.. So people who work with plants need to be good at maths...

Computer programming is based on maths... so people who work with computers need to be good at maths...

The person at the recycling centre needs to be able to pay you the right amount when you return aluminum cans to them and so they too need to be good at maths..

although a lot of places have a calculator they do need to be able to operate the calculator and if the calculator is not working they need to be able to figure it out

Writers, artists, actors all use maths in their creative pursuits... the concept of balance in art is a maths based concept.. mixing more of the same tone of paint needs calculations that are maths..Knowing how much paper you need for your printer to print up your manuscript to send to a publiher involves maths..

Sports players use maths all the time often without stopping to realise they are using maths... where will the ball land? is a mathematical question... how hard do I need to hit the ball? is a mathematical question.. How fast do I need to run every minute to win this marathon... How much food do I need to eat to have the right fuel for my body to win this competition? is a maths question..

mothers use maths all the time... they measure out formula in baby bottles, they meaasure out washing powder, they weigh fruit and veg in the grocery store, they calculate the weekly budget for the family, they pay bills, they measure their childrens growth, they work out how much food they need to feed the family.. all of these things are maths based...

Without maths the world would stop... because even when we arent thinking about maths we are still going to be using it...

Oh and algebra is used in every area of life.. so dont dismiss it... it is important to be able to think in a mathematical way about something that is not a numeral...

2a +1b = ?
2a x 1b = ?

these questions could be about anything.... the 'a' could be a symbol or atoms of oxygen and the 'b' could be a symbol for atoms of hydrogen....

they could of course be anything...
mangoes and peaches...
or
chlorine and stabiliser in your pool....

you will use algebra without knowing it is algebra right through your life so get a good grasp of it now... study hard because if you do well in maths the world really is your oyster and you will be able to choose whatever you want to do in life...

For 99% of people, math is a complete waste of time, once you know the basics the rest is as pointless as an air guitar competition. Like most schooling it is a carry over from ancient times when snobs learned so that they could be above the lower classes who couldnt afford education.
Ask a teacher why you need to know a history date and they will be unable to give a proper answer, instead they will beat around the bush like a politician saying its important because it is. Just like the answer below provided by venkat, just blabbering on about "you might need it" "its important because it is" but cant give any real examples. Show me a pastry cook that uses quadratic equations? Show me a cop that uses trig? Spending six years learning algebra etc in case you might need to calculate the distance you have travelled??? See what I mean about clutching at straws unable to say anything sensible, if math were important you would know why instantly because the answer would be important; why do people give blood? Cars have reset buttons, thats how you calculate how far you have gone but if you spent more time living in the real world and less time on math you will never use, you wouldnt make those kind of silly statements.
The schooling system is archaic, its a dinosaur way past its extinction date.

Because mathematics will help you a lot in arriving a quicker solutions to your problem. I mean to say that you need to apply maths in your situations to arrive at the result.

Be it a decision making, an analysis, or a problem solving or even trivial things.

For example when are you travelling in a vehicle, you need to quickly calculate the distance you have travelled, you need to know mathematics on how to arrive at it. I can cite lot more examples...

Scientists think that mathematics holds the answer to everything in the universe (starting from the biggest of masses to the smallest of things). So overall it is the most important subject of all.In everyday life mathematics is important especially when it comes to dealing with money. But you don't need to know no more than basic algebra for everyday life.
The difinition of science is the study of observation, measurement, calculation, conclusion and prediction. So without maths science is like a car without an engine

It's important to know the basics, but the complex Algebra and advanced math is a complete waste of time, unless it's conducive to a specific career.

Experts in numerology use the numbers to determine the best time for major moves and activities in life. Numerology is used to decide when to invest, when to marry, when to travel, when to change jobs, or relocate. Numerology is an occult science and for me it's fascinating. It is perhaps the easiest of the occult arts to understand and use. All you need is the birth date and the complete name of an individual to unlock all of the secrets that the numbers hold.

We use math everyday from deciding how much to put in that recipe to figuring out how far away the mall or a new store is. Algebra and Trig are great. I found both rather simple to do. Not that we really use them but they are fun.
