Hello!!!

iam having xp sp2 & win98 on the same systm. In 98, if no work is done with the systm (idle), the "HDD" LED would not glow.

But in XP SP2, even when the systm is idle, the HDD LED is glowing (meaning that the systm is working or doing some thing)
& there is no application (such as antivirus) running behind. Also sometimes the CD drive is being read frequently. (even though i dont apply any command to do so)

Why is it so? What is the computer doing (in XP) when the system is idle . I didnt even schedule any task to the comp.?

Iam expecting clear explanation so that u get 10 points!!!

There is probably 20 or more incidents running in the background of XP that you will not see running in the processes in Task Manager. Find a piece of software that records all running processes and start it. Leave the system to idle and watch what is running. It is truly amazing what is running in XP at any one given time. The list is long, and that is probably showing the movement on the drive. Nothing to worry about.

Have a good one

There is no clear explanation, becuase there's too many things to consider on a computer

Maybe it's a service running since you updated your system, check to see what services are active and disable to ones you don't need.

Maybe it's a program running in the background

or worst case:
Someone hacked into you system and is using it as a jump point. Be weary especially if you drives are being access. No program should access your drives unless you do it or have a scanning program doing it for you. If neither, then disconnect from the internet for a couple of days and see if something is still trying to access your drives. If not then you might be hacked into.
