I've had a memory foam mattress for over a year and wouldn't go back to using traditional mattresses. I've used a memory foam pillow for much longer and my chronic neck and shoulder problems disappeared almost overnight when I started to use it! it takes a little while to get used to.

I've had back problems since I was a teenager and I've tried various orthopaedic mattresses but the memory foam suits me best.

Most of these mattresses, even the less expensive ones, can be bought with a sixty day trial period - money back deal and are guaranteed for ten years.

You can also get a memory foam mattress topper which is much cheaper but I don't know how effective it is.

I think the Tempura mattress has been around for a long time so I don't think it's a gimmick. The cheaper versions have only come on to the market in the last couple of years but the technology is all the same.

Tempur is very expensive, a couple of friends have Tempur beds and say they are worth every penny. I have Tempur pillows and paid around £70 each and wouldnt swap for a cheaper pillow as offer more support. There are plenty of memory foam mattresses on the market, but not as good as Tempur I dont think. Its worth investing in a well known brand.

I also had back problems, I purchased a knock-off brand and paid $450.00 for a king set at a very reputable furniture store. It has a 10 year warranty, the sales assoc. said i could return it in 9 yrs, 364 days if i wanted and the warranty would still be good. Ive had it for 4 years now and love it. You dont have to flip them every so often either. There is only one problem that i have found, These kind of mattresses hold your body heat. Good in the winter because you can turn your heat down at night and be comfortable and save some money on elec. but in the summer run a ceiling fan. I would never go back to a reg mattress at all!!! good luck

I thought I needed a new mattress but instead tried a memory foam topper, which did the trick. Tempurpedic is very expensive. You can get toppers from Target, Bed Bath and Beyond, etc. and need not spend a lot. By the way, memory foam is better than just plain foam rubber.

My husband used to work at a furniture store delivering these things. He calls them expensive wet noodles. When they delivered one, they had a 75% chance that they would be back at that house in less than a week to pick it up. It's one of those things that you either love or hate. If you do try one, just be sure you buy from a reputable dealer that has a really good return policy. He said the biggest problem with them (besides the weight-they are VERY dense and weigh a ton) is that customers complain that once you lay down and fall asleep, you sink down in rather than sleep on top of it. This makes it extremely difficult to move, whether it's just to roll over and find a comfy spot, or try to get out of bed in a hurry. Not a good idea, especially if your back hurts to begin with.
You mentioned that your current mattress is making your back hurt worse. Is it just old? If it used to be comfy, then I would suggest buying the same type of mattress. Or you could ask a chiropractor or your family doc (whichever is helping you treat your back issues) what they would suggest. That might be better than spending money on something that doesn't solve the problem.
Good Luck to you and Sweet Dreams...

I tried them out when I was going to get a mattress and I found that , for the price , they were not worth it at all. For $600 I got a good pillowtop queen size matress. For several times that price, I coudl get a Tempur Pedic matress. I also found that the Tempur Pedic offered no real support that I noticed. Best advice is for you to go to a few matress stores and try them out. That is what I did.

Yes, yes, yes, yes!

I have scoliosis and chronic back pain. I used have problems moving for the first hour every morning because my back hurt so much. I got my Tempur mattress 3 weeks ago and it is WONDERFUL! I haven't had my usual morning back ache since.

Yes, it is expensive but it is so worth it. If you do have a genuine back problem, you don't have to pay VAT if you use:

I got mine from them and they were super efficient and delivered in no time at all.

No, in my opinion they are a gimmick. We got one this year becaue I suffer from back problems. It was very expensive.

Basically the heat of your body sort of softens the foam and you sink into a hole which is exactly the same shape as your body. Fair enough.

Big problem is when you want to turn over in bed. You sort of have to push yourself up, out of the hole you have made and it wakens you up.

So I guess for someone young and healthy, who doesn't turn over in bed and who doesn't have a bad back it might be OK. But it kind of defeats the purpose of having it in the first place.

I strongly suggest you get to try one of these for a week or so before deciding.

I managed 4 nights then it was consigned to the garage. There's no second hand market for these things either.
