If the sound comes from the back it's likely the cars had a new transverse brake pipe at tome time in it's life, and the new one isn't the right one, probably too big. This means pressure doesn't build properly and gets unevenly placed onto the pads, meaning you may have your pads only pressing in at one side. This would explain the slight loss of braking, and the soft feel of the peddle. To be honest though it's only really theoretical but it's worth checking this out. Technically the symptoms you listed do match in to this type of fault, but fitting the wrong pipe is not only very difficult but would require a real dunderhead of a mechanic to do without noticing!!

make sure there is nothing else that could be interfering with the hub or disc. as for the abs light coming on there could be a wiring problem if there are no codes and the pump has been replaced.when the pump was replaced was it bled properly. is there any air in the system, sounds like there could be if the pedal has a bit of give.

Sounds like it could be you wheel bearings, have them checked out, I had the same problem with a Mitsubishi colt, turned out to be the bearings, good luck.
