How did the medical team decide that the runner Shanthi was not a female? So, does this mean she cannot participate in any event? Does this happen by birth? Since she comes from a poor family, she has had no sex change definitely. It is a very sad news and the girl must be unaware of this.

A gender test is primarily used during the sixth week of pergnancy. This is the time when sex hormones would determine the gender of the child. The gender test is usually made when the parents of the unborn child wants to know what sex their child is going to be so that they could prepare for the coming of it into this world.

As for the case of this athlete, The International Olympic Committee sometimes have checks done on female althletes when they have doubts about their "gender".
This type of test is called The Chromotin Test. The medical technichian uses a swab and gets DNA from the inner cheek of the person in question. Puts the cells under a microscope and examines it.

This analysis is to determine the chromosomes of the person. As you know XX is the chromosome for women and XY is the chromosome for men. Sometimes some women have abnormalities with their cromosome that it shows an extra Y(XXY) or is the same make up as that of men (XY).

This form of analysis is mostly used to check the DNA of a person to search for clues about underlying diseases or abnormalities which are acquired before birth.

Sometimes this abnormalities in the chromosomal structure of a person can be physically seen. Sometimes a woman appears to be more masculine (more muscle structure, the clitoris is enlarged, minimal breast formation) and a man to appear more feminine( small face, soft voice, less muscle structure, a small penis or sometimes no scrotum).

The reason why this female athlete failed the gender test is, as stated in the Yahoo page(not in verbatim), "She has more Y Chromosomes".

I guess the International Olympic Committee can't simply let a gynecologist give the athlete a routine check up.

I'm not sure who this runner is and therefore I'm not sure of the exact context of this gender test. However.....a test of a persons sex is usually done at a genetic level, it's not just a case of what a person looks like, but what thier genetic makeup is. While in general most people born with "female" anatomy are biologically female, this isn't always true. There is a certain percentage of the population who is born between sexes or with unclear genitalia. This can include being born with both a complete penis and a vagina but more commonly there are incomplete formations of both organs. This applies to the internal organs as well, and in certain cases the external genitalia does not match the internal organs. For example a "girl" being born with a fully formed vagina, but also having undecended testes and no overies. If the genitalia seems normal the childs intergender status can often go unnoticed and won't be questioned untill the girl fails to menstrate or can not get pregnant as an adult. I would guess that the medical team tested her and discovered she had XYchromosomes, wether that makes her "male" or not is debatable.

Transgenders have a problem with sports. It depends on which he/she gender is physically dominent, as to what gender she should be placed in. Projesterone, and estrogen, will determine if she developes breasts, slender waist, loss of hair, and will not change the voice. The only option for some transgenders is surgery, or hormone thereapy. Others go half-way, and seek out bi-sexual partners. It's not an easy fix.

Ha! I saw that & wondered the same thing myself. It did say there were more male chromosomes then expected, so I guess they did more than just ask Shanthi to drop the pants; eh?

Drop your drawers and you either pass it or flunk. Evidently it's a difficult test for some so they really need to study more.

i imagine they favor to target her for psychological madness. i realized on the cover of one among her books, she blamed teenage females for his or her sexual encounters. i'm guessing she develop into too ugly to have any boy take activity in her at the same time as she develop into youthful, because if she did, she may recognize ways perplexing that is for teen females at the same time as they have boys forcing themselves on them.
